Why It Matters
Up to 30% Reinjury Risk Without Proper Rehab
Research shows that without structured strength and return-to-sport testing, your risk of re-tearing your ACL or injuring the other knee is significantly higher. We use objective benchmarks at every stage to ensure you're ready — not just hopeful.
What Makes Us Different
Our Rehab Pathway
Phase 1 – Pre-Operative Phase
Preparation before surgery to optimise outcomes. Focus on reducing swelling, maintaining strength, and setting the foundation for a successful post-operative recovery.
Phase 2 – Protection & Activation Phase (0–4 Weeks)
Protect the graft while restoring range of motion, reducing swelling, restoring walking and reactivating key muscle groups around the knee.
Phase 3 – Strength & Movement Phase (4–12 Weeks)
This phase is focused on rebuilding strength, control and movement quality through the lower limb and trunk.
Phase 3B – Preparation to Run Phase (8–12 Weeks)
Before running is introduced, athletes must first show they can tolerate the building blocks required for safe progression. This phase uses the Step Ahead Plyometric and Running Drill Frameworks to prepare the athlete for the mechanical demands of running.
Phase 4 – Running & Power Development Phase (3–6 Months)
Gradual return to straight-line running, acceleration, change of direction and power-based training. Objective benchmarks guide every progression.
Phase 5 – High-Level Running, Game-Like Drills & Training Integration (6–12+ Months)
This phase bridges the gap between rehab and full sporting participation. Sport-specific agility, cutting, pivoting, and full training integration. Return-to-sport testing completed throughout.
Phase 5B – Structured Return to Contact Progression (Contact Sports)
A dedicated phase for athletes returning to contact sports, with progressive exposure to game-like contact situations before full return to play.
No Two Athletes Are the Same
Every ACL rehabilitation program at Step Ahead is individualised to the athlete.
Every program is individualised based on:
- Graft type
- Associated injuries
- Sport demands
- Positional requirements
- Previous injury history
- Return-to-play goals
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Returning to sport based on time alone (e.g. '9 months post-op') instead of objective strength testing
Skipping the strength phase and jumping straight to running
Not training change of direction before returning to pivoting sports
Ignoring the other leg — your 'good' knee is also at risk
Stopping rehab once you feel fine instead of completing return-to-sport criteria
Timeline Expectations
ACL rehab typically takes 9–12 months for a full return to sport. We work with you through every phase — from the first week post-surgery to the day you step back on the field. Every milestone is evidence-based and measurable.
